Digital? One HF station , a skip distance away, can cover huge areas, whole countries or states, so
why not have a repeater or several, many many less than VHF or UHF would need to cover the same area? So, that's what I'm doing on HF with Codec2 and my 20W, it has been seen covering New Zealand and Victoria from here Sydney. This is experimenting, see qso.freedv.org for coordination.
